Dry
Tortugas
Almost 70 miles west of Key West, Florida,
lies a cluster of 7 coral reefs known as the
Dry Tortugas (to let mariners know that
there was no fresh water). These reefs,
along with the surrounding shoals, make up
this national park.
The diving is beautiful (some of the best in
the United States), exciting, and varied,
with an assortment of reefs, wrecks, and
towers. The reef system is one of the most
remote and least visited in the world. As a
result, the coral is in excellent shape and
fish and reef creatures are both healthy and
abundant. The Dry Tortugas are also known
for legends of bloodthirsty pirates and
buried treasures of silver and gold.

Fort Jefferson, located on Garden Key, was
the place where Dr. Mudd was imprisoned. Dr.
Mudd was convicted of treating the man who
shot President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. In
1992, Fort Jefferson became the Dry Tortugas
National Park to protect both the historical
and natural features.
